Damper Replacements in San Antonio

Quick answer: The damper is the metal plate inside your fireplace that opens to let smoke out and closes to keep heat, cold air, rain and animals from coming down the chimney when the fireplace isn’t in use. A rusted, warped or stuck damper should be repaired or replaced.

How do I know my damper needs replacing?

Common signs are a handle that won’t move, a damper that won’t close all the way, drafts or outside smells coming through the fireplace, rust flakes in the firebox, or daylight visible past a closed damper.

Should the damper be open when there’s a fire?

Yes. Always open the damper fully before lighting a fire and leave it open until the fire and embers are completely out, or smoke and carbon monoxide can back up into the room.

Does a gas fireplace need the damper open?

Vented gas logs need an open flue to carry exhaust out, which is why many have a damper clamp that keeps the damper partly open. Check your gas log manual, or ask us during a visit. See our gas logs page.
