Chimney work in historic districts
Many homes near downtown are more than a century old. In a local historic district, the City of San Antonio’s Office of Historic Preservation reviews exterior changes. Repairs that use the same materials and design can usually get a quick staff approval, while changes in materials or design go to the Historic and Design Review Commission. The city’s design guidelines also say repointing should be done by a professional with mortar that matches the original in color, profile and composition, because mortar that is too hard can damage historic brick.
Do I need city approval to repair my chimney?
Cleaning, sweeping and inspections don’t need approval. For visible masonry repairs, a new chimney cap or other exterior changes, check with the Office of Historic Preservation first if your home is in a local historic district.
